Adults Karate
Many of our students have come to BBMA as adults. Martial arts is defintely not just for kids. Most of these adult students have come with no previous experience at all in the martial arts, some tell stories of stopping when they were kids and regretting it ever since. What ever level of fitness from totally unfit to the honed athlete, whatever level of martial arts experience, from brand new beginner to experienced Black Belt, BBMA has a program that will suit your level and help you reach your goals and there is no age barrier.
“I began training at Liz Mahler’s Black Belt Martial Arts at an unusually advanced age with virtually no expectation of ever getting to black belt. The very thought of that would have been laughable at the time. Now ten years later I am a second degree black belt working towards my third degree, well beyond any expectations I ever had.
The main requirement to success at BBMA is consistent application. Anyone who is willing and able to train regularly and try their best will find a support system that will inevitably carry them through to any desired goal.
The benefits regarding interpersonal relationships, fitness, friendship, mutual respect, self esteem and fulfilment goes well beyond simply wearing a different belt.”
Paul Mitchell 70yrs, 2nd Dan Black Belt.
We have been in the business of teaching martial arts for over 30yrs. In that time we have come to know a lot about teaching our adult students. Firstly, we know that many adults wish they could do martial arts but think its too late to start. We know that for the one adult that actually calls our school there maybe 5 others who are too unsure to do so. We also know that some adults believe they might look silly doing martial arts or they are worried about being injured. At BBMA we are very aware of these fears and thats why we have a Free Introductory Program.
The Free Introductory Program
We introduce anyone interested in doing martial arts through our Free Introductory Program. This program is designed to educate and inform you about our school in a friendly, non threatening manner. The program consists of a free evaluation with our Program Director who will answer all the questions you might have about training with BBMA, and a one on one private lesson, just you and one of our professional martial arts instructors. In this lesson you will be evaluated on your fitness, co ordination, reaction, flexibility, balance and desire so we can find the program that is going to fit your needs. This lesson will also help us determine when you are ready to join a group class. The group class that will be recommended to you will be with other students of similar level and age.
Beginners
If you are a beginner in the martial arts you will most likely be placed in our Basic Program, this program is designed to start you on your martial arts journey, you will be learning the foundations of martial arts - grounding, centering and focusing, and the principles of a Black Belt attitude, while learning practical self defence and improving your fitness from your very first class.
While you are in the Basic Program you will be watched closely to make sure you are training safely, progressing and importantly, enjoying your journey. Our Basic program is really a ‘trial program’ which gives you the opportunity to get know your instructors and school and to decide that this is the school for you. It is also an opportunity for our instructors to assess you as a student that fits with our school.
You will hear a lot about ‘Black Belt Training (BBT)’ while you are in the Basic program. Every student during their ‘trial’ program will choose one of two paths to Black Belt - Leadership training or Masterclub training. When you enter BBT your class will be 15min longer than your basic class and you will be given the option to train more often if desired. By the time you are in BBT you have progressed through 2 or 3 belts and will be learning more advanced techniques, becoming fitter and stronger
Advanced Students
Sometimes we have adults come to BBMA who have done martial arts before. If that is the case with you we will still do a Free Introductory Program. This Free introductory Program will again be an opportunity for you to ask all the questions you might have about studying our form of martial arts. The Instructor and Program Director will be able to point out the similarities and points of difference between what you have done previously and what you will do in a BBMA school. They will also be able to assess in consultaton with you, the level at which we think you would be best to participate.
